Want to get more comfortable working with patients? Whether you're looking for a job or a place to volunteer, we've gathered some great ways to start building clinical experience.
Paid Clinical Experiences
Patient Care Technician
Help care for patients by taking vitals, assisting with daily needs, and working alongside nurses.
Certification:
Not required. Most employers provide on-the-job training for PCTs.

EMT
(Emergency Medicine Technician)
Certification:
Required. You must obtain EMT certification to work as an EMT in Texas.
Career Avenues:
Medical Assistant/
Nursing Assistant
Work directly with patients by taking vitals, preparing exam rooms, and assisting with basic clinical procedures.
Certification:
Not required in Texas. Some employers may prefer certification or provide on-the-job training.
Career Avenues:
Phlebotomist
Draw blood and work directly with patients in hospitals, clinics, labs, and blood donation centers.

Medical Scribe
Follow physicians during patient visits and document medical histories, exams, and treatment plans.
Certification:
Not required. Employers typically provide training for the role.

Physical Therapy Technician
Work alongside physical therapists to help patients with exercises, equipment, and treatment sessions while gaining hands-on experience in rehabilitation.
Certification:
No state certification required; training is typically provided on the job.

Volunteer across Austin-area hospitals while supporting patients, families, and healthcare teams.
